Tillbaka i Florida och inklarerade!/Back in Florida and cleared in!

Vi var tio båtar som låg vid Wardle´s Dock. Alla väntade på väder för att gå över Golfströmmen till Florida. De flesta amerikanska båtar lyssnar på Chris Parker som sänder väderprognoser för Bahamas, Karibien och Stilla Havet varje dag. Att lyssna på prognosen för Bahamas tar ungefär 30 minuter. Chris sänder på USB 8137. Om man har ett abonnemang med Chris får man prognoserna på mail och har möjlighet att kontakta honom för att få ”skräddarsydda” prognoser för exakt den rutt och tid man tänker segla. Chris Parker är en auktoritet och ingen går ut om han sagt att det blir dåligt väder.

Vindprognosen som Chris gav sade att vinden till en början skulle vara ganska frisk 15-25 knop Ost och med en våghöjd på 6 fot (1,8 meter) men sedan vrida mot sydost och syd och minska till 10-15 knop.

Vi tyckte detta var ganska perfekta förhållanden och det tyckte en av de andra båtarna också så vi blev två båtar som lämnade på lördagsmorgonen. Startade med ett rev i storseglet och genua. Våghöjden som avskräckt de övriga båtarna från att lämna blev omkring hälften. Sträckan vi hade framför oss var omkring 230 sjömil. Vinden räckte halva vägen sedan blev den så svag att vi kompletterade med motor. Angjorde Florida-kusten vid Fort Pierce och tog oss därefter den lilla biten upp till Vero Beach City Marina.

När man som utländsk båt ankommer till USA måste man klarera in hos US Customs and Border Protection. Innan man besöker dem måste man ha ett referensnummer. Tidigare fick man detta genom att ringa ett telefonnummer och besvara ett antal frågor. Nu har man moderniserat och utvecklat en app. Man går in på appen och fyller i svar på ett antal frågor, fotograferar sitt pass m.m.

På Bahamas hade vi internetabonnemang hos ”alive” och vid seglingen mot Florida hade vi fantastiskt bra täckning ända upp till 35 sjömil från land.

Eftersom det är lite osäkert med internetåtkomst för oss vid ankomsten till USA passade jag på att fylla i appens frågor när vi seglade. Fick efter en stund ett svarsmail som säger att vår ansökan att komma in i USA har avslagits och att vi inte är välkomna in i landet!

Diskuterar och funderar över vad som blivit fel. Vi vet att våra pass är OK. Våra US-Visa är OK. Dokumentationen om båten är OK. Vårt tidigare cruising-permit skall vara utgånget innan man på nytt kommer in i landet. Det är utgånget men har någon gång hört att det skall vara utgånget med mer än 14 dagar vilket det inte är. Kan det vara problemet? Eller har FBI eller CIA snappat upp att jag sagt något negativt om presidenten……?

Ankommer Vero Beach söndag kväll. På måndag morgon rakar jag mig för att se proper ut och tar på mig min finaste skjorta och Kerstin tar på sig en klänning och så tar vi oss till flygplatsen i Fort Pierce där US Customs and Border Protection har ett kontor.

Träffar en trevlig officer där och visar honom referensnumret jag fått men också att det står ”DENIED”. Han tycks inte bry sig så mycket men ger oss en del blanketter att fylla i. När vi fyllt i blanketterna har han under tiden varit inne i datasystemet och kollat upp oss. Han berättar då att felet vi gjort är att vi fyllt i appen innan vi var över gränsen till USA. De hade full koll på vår exakta position när vi fyllde i appen.

Det kändes onekligen lite besvärligt när vi fick mailet med avslagen ansökan om att komma in i landet men det löste sig. Vi fick våra pass stämplade och nytt cruising permit för den tid vi ville ha och allt är frid och fröjd.

Ankomstdagen till USA var också födelsedag för en av oss och vi firade med ett härligt restaurangbesök på Ocean Grill i Vero Beach.

Har sedan fortsatt vår färd norrut på ICW (Intracoastal Waterway) och gjort stopp i Cocoa, Daytona och nu i St. Augustine. St Augustine är en vacker plats och USA:s äldsta stad. Här är en ganska stor marina där de flesta båtarna ligger vid boj. När jag kommer iland hälsas jag av en av marinakillarna: ”Hello Staffan, welcome back!” Ganska kul! Vi har ju varit här några gånger tidigare. Blir ett besök på hösten när vi går söderut och ett besök på våren när vi går norrut. Har ju gjort detta i tre år nu. Känns som at vi fortsätter med detta ett tag till för det är så himla roligt!

We were ten boats at Wardle´s Dock waiting for a weather window to do the crossing over the Gulf Stream to Florida. Most American boaters listen to Chris Parker who makes daily weather forecasts for the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Pacific. To listen to the forecast for the Bahamas takes around 30 minutes. Chris broadcasts on USB 8137. If you have a subscription with Chris you receive his forecasts on email and you can contact him to have your own personal forecast for the route and time you wish. Chris Parker is an authority and almost nobody goes out if he says it is going to be bad weather.

The forecasts we heard from Chris said the wind at the beginning would be rather strong 15-25 knots from East, swell around 6 feet. Wind later changing towards Southeast and South diminishing to around 10-15 knots.

We thought this was rather perfect conditions and one of the other boats also thought that so we were two boats departing Saturday morning. Started with a reef in the main and genua.

The swell forecast of six feet that we think made the other boats wait until another day became around three feet. We had around 230 nm in front of us. The wind was enough for around half the way and then we supported with the engine. We arrived the Florida coast at Fort Pierce and then made the short trip to Vero Beach City Marina.

When you arrive to USA on a foreign flagged vessel you have to clear in at US Customs and Border Protection. Before that you need to have a reference number. Earlier you used to get this by making a phone call and answer some questions. Now they have modernized the routine and made an app.

You go in to the app and answer some questions, take a photo of your passport etc.

When sailing in the Bahamas we had internet subscription with ”alive”. When sailing towards Florida we had extremely good internet all the way up to 35 nm away from land.

As it is a little unsure with internet for us when we arrive to US I filled in the app while sailing as we had so good internet connection. After a little while I received a mail saying that ”Unfortunately, your U.S. CBP ROAM Trip ID xxxxx has not been approved and you may not enter the U.S. at this time.”

Together we discussed what went wrong. We know that our passports are OK. Our US Visas are OK. The boat documentation is OK. Our earlier cruising permit shall be expired before you can enter the US again. It is expired but I think I have heard somebody saying it should be expired more than 14 days before you can enter again and that is not the case. Could this be the problem? Or has FBI or CIA heard anything about me mentioning anything negative about the president…….?

We arrived Vero Beach Sunday evening. On Monday morning I shaved my face to look proper and put on my finest shirt and Kicki puts on a dress. Then we went to the airport in Fort Pierce where US Customs and Border Protection has an office.

We met a nice officer there and showed him the reference number I received but also that it says ”denied”. He seems not to care so much and gives us som papers to fill in. When we have done that he has meanwhile been in to the computer and made a check on us. He tells us that the mistake we did was to answer the app before we had crossed the boarder to US. They had 100% control over what our position was when we filled in the app.

We felt it as a huge problem when we received the mail with entrance denied but all problems were easily solved. We got our passports stamped and a new cruising permit for the time we wanted and everything is now good.

Our arrival day was also the birthday for one of us and we celebrated with a very nice dinner at Ocean Grill in Vero Beach.

Later we have continued our travel northbound on ICW (Intracoastal Waterways) and made stops in Cocoa, Daytona and now in St Augustine. St Augustine is a beautiful place and the eldest city in USA. There is a rather big marina where most of the boats are on mooring bouys. When I came ashore I was greeted by one of the marina guys: ”Hello Staffan, welcome back!” Quite fun! We have now been here a couple of times. We visit once in the fall when we travel south and once in the spring when we go north. We have done this for three years now. It feels like we will go on doing this for still some time because it is so much fun!
