Vi vill önska alla våra blogg-läsare en God Jul och Gott Nytt År!

Denna säsong blir det inte någon segling för oss genom situationen som råder med Coronan. Balance står på land hos Green Cove Springs Marina i norra Florida. Det finns för närvarande inga möjligheter för oss att ta oss dit. Vi befinner oss hemma på Bohus-Malmön under vintern. Därmed blir det inte heller så mycket aktivitet här på vår blogg.

Hösten här hemma har varit en mörk och dyster tid. Mörk pga klimatet här på 58 grader nord och dystert pga utvecklingen med Corona-viruset.

Nu blir dock allting bara bättre. Dagarna blir ljusare från den 21 december. Allt tyder på att vaccin mot Corona snart blir tillgängligt och i USA får man snart en ny president!

Ja denna  vinter blir det inte någon segling för vår del. I familjen har vi dock en ny långseglare. Vårt barnbarn Lova som är 16 år har i höst börjat på seglande gymnasiet på Öckerö. En del av gymnasietiden tillbringas på tremastade barken T/S Gunilla. Normala år seglas T/S Gunilla till Karibien och USA men i nuvarande Corona-tider håller man sig på vår sida av Atlanten.

Lova mönstrade nyligen ombord på T/S Gunilla i Lissabon. Seglingen går sedan till Madeira, La Palma, Teneriffa och småningom till Azorerna och sedan tillbaka till Lissabon. Ca två månader är eleverna ombord och de lämnar Lissabon den 25 december.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers!

This season there will be no sailing for us due to the Corona situation. Balance is on the hard in Green Cove Springs Marina  in Northern Florida. At the moment there is no possibility for us to get there. We are at home on Bohus-Malmön during the winter and there will not be much activity on our blog.

The fall has been a dark and sad time. Dark because of our climate here on 58 degrees North and sad because of the development with the Corona virus.

However, now everything will become a lot better. From December 21st days are becoming lighter. It looks as the Corona-vaccine will be available shortly and in the United States there will very soon be a new president!

Well, there will be no sailing for us this winter. In our family we have however a new long distance sailor. Our granddaughter Lova, 16 years old has this fall begun her high school studies. Her high school is at the sailing high school on Öckerö. Part of the high school time is spent aboard the three-masted bark ship T/S Gunilla. Normal years without Corona the ship is sailed across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and US East Coast but this year they have to stay on this side of the pond.

Lova recently signed on the ship in Lisbon. The students will then sail to Madeira, La Palma, Tenerife and then to the Azores and finally back to Lisbon. They will spend two months on the ship and are leaving Lisbon on December 25.

Vår hemresa blev en kamp mot klockan. Hade en flygning bokad den 25 mars. Vi kände att situationen blev osäker med flygavgångar då vi hörde att flygbolagen håller på att ställa in avgångar. Valde då att ändra vår bokning till den 22 mars. Denna avgång blev senare annullerad. Lyckades då boka ett flyg med Norwegian den 20 mars. Två dagar före avgång ändrade man avresan från Orlando till Miami. Tog oss fyra dagar att ta oss från Vero Beach till Green Cove Springs Marina. När vi kom dit hade vi en dag för att göra iordning båten för landförvaring. Ta ner och vika alla segel, ta ur luften ur gummibåten och packa ihop den, vi lyfter in livflotte och utombordsmotor i båten. Byte av oljor och filter på motorn. Packa ihop och göra iordning, städa.

Nästa morgon var lyftet på land bokat men blev inte så tidigt som sagt vilket gjorde att vi fick lite mer tid att göra iordning ombord.

USA har ännu inte stängt sina gränser för ankommande båtar. Dock har vissa hamnar och marinor stängt. När vi kom till Green Cove Springs Marina pratade man om att stänga ner verksamheten pga Corona-viruset. Vilken tur att de inte gjort det innan vi fick lyft på land!

Sista kvällen i Green Cove Springs sov vi över hos Pam som är OCC Port Officer i Green Cove Springs. Avresedagen tog vi vägen via Customs & Border Protection i Jacksonville där vi får deponera vårt båtregistreringsbevis. Detta eftersom vi f.n. inte har något cruising permit i USA. Vi har s.k. ”decal” och problemet är inte så stort. Därefter hyrbilen till flygplatsen i Miami.

Flygbokningen var med Norwegian via Gatwick, London. Därefter till Helsingfors. Hade bokat SAS från Helsingfors till Stockholm och därifrån till Göteborg. Avgången från Helsingfors till Stockholm var dagen efter ankomsten till Helsingfors. Vi var lite bekymrade över detta då Finland har inreseförbud pga Corona-viruset. Skulle medfört övernattning på flygplatsen i Helsingfors. Kom på att vi kunde flyga RyanAir direkt från London till Göteborg. RyanAir avgår dock från Stanstead Airport som ligger norr om London. Gatwick ligger söder om London. Bokade hyrbil på Gatwick och körde till Stanstead. Vi visste inte säkert om vi hade möjlighet att komma in i England med hänsyn till Corona som stängt de flesta gränser. Det visade sig dock inte vara något problem och vi kom in i England. Fick vänta på avgång några timmar på Stanstead. I dessa Corona-tider var det ingen servering på restaurangerna på flygplatsen. På en del av restaurangerna sålde man ”take-away” men man fick inte sitta i restaurangerna. Inget öl eller vin serverades någonstans.

Landade på Landvetter, Göteborg vid 22-tiden. Hyrbilsfirmorna på Landvetter var naturligtvis stängda och vi övernattade på flygplatsen i avvaktan på att de öppnade kl 10 nästa dag. Fick en hyrbil och tog oss hem. 

Denna segelsäsong har inte blivit som vi planerat. Reparationer efter kollision med en stock har medfört lång tid på varv och sedan har Corona-viruset påverkat slutet på säsongen en hel del och ledde också till att vi valde att avbryta, ta Balance på land och flyga hem. 

Vi hoppas att Corona-situationen förbättras under sommaren och att vi kan återvända till Balance i höst men ingen vet något om hur det blir med detta.

Eftersom Balance nu står på land och vi är hemma på Bohus-Malmön i Sverige gör vi nu ett uppehåll i bloggen tills vi är tillbaka ombord på Balance.

Our return journey was a battle against the clock. Had a flight booked on March 25. We felt that the situation became uncertain with flight departures when we heard that the airlines are canceling flights. We chosed to change our booking to March 22. This departure was later canceled. Then managed to book a flight with Norwegian on March 20. Two days before departure, the departure was changed from Orlando to Miami. 

Took us four days to get from Vero Beach to Green Cove Springs Marina. When we got there we had one day to prepare the boat for storage on the hard. Taking down and fold all the sails, remove the air from the dinghy and fold it, we take the life raft and the outboard engine into the boat. Replacement of oils and filters on the engine. Pack up and prepare, cleaning.

The next morning, the lift on the hard was booked but did not arrive as early as said, which meant that we had a little more time to prepare the boat.

The United States has not yet closed its borders for arriving yachts. However, some ports and marinas have closed. When we arrived at Green Cove Springs Marina they talked about closing down the business because of the Corona virus. What a lucky thing they didn't do it before they took us on the hard!

Last night in Green Cove Springs we slept over at Pam's OCC Port Officer in Green Cove Springs. The departure day we made our way via Customs & Border Protection in Jacksonville where we deposit our boat registration certificate. This is because we do not have a cruising permit in the United States at the moment. We have so-called "decal" and the problem is not so big. Thereafter the rental car to the airport in Miami.

The flight booking was with Norwegian via Gatwick, London. Then to Helsinki. Had booked SAS from Helsinki to Stockholm and from there to Gothenburg. The departure from Helsinki to Stockholm was the day after arrival in Helsinki. We were a little concerned about this as Finland has closed their borders due to the Corona virus. Would have resulted in an overnight stay at the airport in Helsinki. Found out that we could fly RyanAir directly from London to Gothenburg. However, RyanAir departs from Stanstead Airport which is north of London. Gatwick is located south of London. Booked a rental car at Gatwick and drove to Stanstead. We did not know for sure if we had the opportunity to enter England with regard to Corona which has closed most borders. However, it turned out not to be a problem. Had to wait for departure a few hours at Stanstead. In these Corona times, there was no serving at the restaurants at the airport. Some of the restaurants had "take-away" but you were not allowed to sit in the restaurants. No beer or wine was served anywhere.

Landed at Landvetter, Gothenburg at 10 p.m. The car rental companies at Landvetter were of course closed and we stayed overnight at the airport until the car rental company opened at 10am the next day. Got a rental car and took us home.

This sailing season has not become as we planned. Repairs after a collision with a log have taken a long time at Thunderbolt Boatyard and since then the Corona virus has affected a lot at the end of the season and we later chosed to cancel, take Balance on the hard and fly home while it is possible to do so.

We hope that the Corona situation will improve during the summer and that we can return to Balance in the fall, but no one knows anything about how it will be.

Since Balance is now on the hard and we are at home at Bohus-Malmön in Sweden, we are now taking a break from the blog until we are back on board Balance.

Ändrade planer - Changing plans

Vi låg i Vero Beach och väntade på väder för att segla till Bahamas.

Är väldigt förtjusta i att segla i Bahamas och trivs väldigt bra där. I år har vi blivit försenade fyra månader pga reparationer och därför har vårt cruising permit hunnit gå ut innan vi hunnit ut ur USA.

Så just i år är ett skäl för oss att komma över till Bahamas att vi behöver komma ut ur USA för att senare (minst 15 dagar) kunna komma tillbaka och få ett nytt cruising permit.

Efter senaste tidens utveckling av Corona-viruset och restriktioner från olika länder, bl.a. USA, har vi blivit oroliga att vi eventuellt skulle kunna möta problem vid återkomsten till USA från Bahamas.  För närvarande har USA infört stopp för flyg från Europa till USA. Detta gäller ännu inte för båtar som ankommer USA. Dock har många andra länder infört stopp för ankomst med båt, t.ex. Panama, San Blas, Colombia, Honduras, Kanarieöarna, Madeira, Azorerna. 

Funderar över möjligheterna att kunna flyga hem till Sverige. Om inga plan får flyga från Europa till USA lär ju planen ”ta slut” om de bara flyger från USA till Europa. Och hur länge gör dom det?

Har läst att Norwegian Airlines (som vi brukar flyga med) ställer in 3-4000 flygningar april-maj. Dessutom florerar rykten om att de är konkursmässiga.

Vi tog en diskussion med tjänstemannen på CBP (Customs & Border Protection) i Fort Pierce om vår situation. Han ger oss möjlighet att gå till Green Cove Springs för att där ta Balance på land. När vi kommer dit får vi kontakta CBP och deponera våra båtpapper där innan vi lämnar landet. (Detta eftersom vi f.n. inte har cruising permit).

Lyckas omboka flygbiljetter vi har till avgång från Orlando den 22 mars. Risken i dessa tider är att flygningen blir inställd men vi hoppas på det bästa.

Ankommer Green Cove Springs ett par dagar dessförinnan och hoppas hinna lyfta på land och förbereda båten för minst ett halvår på land. Hoppas verkligen situationen med Corona-viruset förbättrats till i höst när vi hoppas vara tillbaka.

Känner oss lite grand som att vi flyr från USA. Och vart flyr vi, jo till Sverige. Vem vet om det är bättre? Känns som att man känner sig tryggast när man är i sitt hem. Kanske vore det bättre att ankra upp i en vik i Bahamas med båten fullastad med proviant, gott om solpaneler som genererar ström, water maker som ger obegränsat med dricksvatten. Inte vara i kontakt med andra människor och vänta ut tiden…. Men sen blir det orkansäsong från juni och då är det kanske inte så kul att ligga ankrad i den fina viken i Bahamas…..

We were waiting in Vero Beach to find a weather window to do the crossing to the Bahamas.

We are very fond of sailing in the Bahamas and like it a lot there. This year we have been delayed four months because of repairs and therefore our cruising permit has expired before we have been able to get out of USA.

So this year, one reason for us to get to the Bahamas is that we need to get out of USA to later, at least 15 days, get back to get a new cruising permit.

What has happened in the development of the Corona virus the latest days worries us a lot. One thing that worries us is whether they will let us into the USA after a time in the Bahamas. This far, USA do not permit flights from Europe to USA. Many other countries like Panama, San Blas, Colombia, Honduras, Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores do not any longer allow boats to enter their countries.

Thinking of the possibilities to be able to fly home to Sweden. If there are no flights from Europe to USA there will probably not be any flights the other way neither. We have read that Norwegian Airlines, that we usually fly with, will cancel 3-4000 flights in April-May. There are also rumors that they are ready for bankruptcy.

We had a discussion with the officer at CBP (Customs & Border Protection) in Fort Pierce about our situation. He gives us the possibility of going to Green Cove Springs to take Balance on the hard. When we arrive there we will have to contact CBP and leave our boat papers in deposit before we leave the country. (This is because we at the moment don’t have a cruising permit)

We were able to change flight tickets that we have for departure from Orlando March 22. There is always a risk these days that the flight might be cancelled but we hope for the best.

We plan to arrive at Green Cove Springs a couple of days before our flight departure and hope to be able to haul out and prepare the boat for at least half a year on the hard. Really hoping the situation with the Corona virus will be better in the fall when we hope to be back.

Feels a bit like we are trying to escape from USA. Escape to where? To Sweden. Who knows if that is any better? We feel like you feel safer when being in your own home. 

Maybe it would be safer to anchor the boat in a nice bay in the Bahamas. The boat fully provisioned, lots of solar panels that generates power, water maker that produces lots of drinking water. Not being in touch with any other people and wait for the virus to disappear….But then comes the hurricane season from June and then maybe it is not so much fun being anchored in the nice bay in the Bahamas….

Vi befinner oss sedan en tid i Vero Beach i Florida. Väntar på lämpliga vindar att ta oss över till Bahamas.

Ungefär fyra månader försenade är vi efter reparationerna vi fått göra i Savannah. Ett problem som kommit genom förseningen är att vårt ”cruising permit” - seglingstillstånd, löpt ut. När man klarerar in en fritidsbåt i USA får man upp till 12 månaders cruising permit. Vårt cruising permit gick ut den 28 februari. Vi har varit hos Customs & Border Protection i Fort Pierce där vi häromåret fick hjälp att förlänga vårt cruising permit. Nu var detta dock helt omöjligt. Ett bekymmer är att bestämmelserna inte alltid tolkas lika på de olika Customs & Border Protection-kontoren och det verkar ibland också som att de olika officerarna tolkar olika.

Har i alla fall fått till en lösning som funkar för oss. Vi har fått ett tillstånd att stanna med båten i USA upp till 12 månader. Får röra oss inom countyt och det innebär att vi får segla till West Palm Beach som funkar som utgångsläge för segling till Bahamas. Innan vi lämnar landet skall vi klarera ut och då få tillbaka våra båtpapper som nu är deponerade hos Customs & Border Protection.

Vero Beach City Marina där vi nu befinner oss är ett trevligt ställe att stanna när man seglar längs Floridas ostkust. Vi har varit här ganska många gånger tidigare och träffar folk som vi känner sedan tidigare. När man kommer till marinan blir man anvisad plats vid en boj. Ofta får man dela bojen med någon annan båt. Ett trevligt sätt att träffa nya vänner. Träffar Earl och Kathy från båten Seeker som vi delade boj med för fyra år sedan!

Båten förtöjer man vid en boj. Iland finns en dingebrygga där man förtöjer sin dinge. Iland finns också marinaanläggningen med duschar, toaletter, tvättmaskiner, lounge med TV och WiFi, dieselbrygga etc. Tre gånger per vecka kan man bli besökt av pump-out båten som tömmer toa-tanken. Här finns en gratis-buss som kommer en gång per timme och ger gratis resa till ett enormt stort shoppingområde. Ett perfekt ställe att proviantera innan man seglar över till Bahamas. Det är absolut skäl att fylla både kyl och frys med proviant innan man seglar till Bahamas då det är stor prisskillnad och också ett mer begränsat utbud i Bahamas.

Varje morgon har man ett radionätverk för att upprätthålla kontakt och information i marinaområdet. Ett antal gemensamma träffar och sammankomster blir det varje vecka.

Det är många som ligger här ganska länge. Skämtsamt kallas marinan ibland för ”Velcro Beach Marina”. (Velcro = kardborre). Det är lätt att ”fastna” här.

Härliga badstränder i Vero Beach

We are since a while in Vero Beach City Marina in Florida. Waiting for a weather window to do the crossing to the Bahamas.

We are around four months delayed from the repairs we had to do in Savannah. One problem that came from the delay is that our cruising permit has expired. When you clear in a pleasure boat into the USA you can get a cruising permit valid up to 12 months. Our cruising permit expired February 28th. We have been to the Customs & Border Protection in Fort Pierce who helped us the other year by extending our cruising permit. However this time it was completely impossible. One problem is that the rules are not always interpreted the same way in all the Customs & Border Protection offices. Even the officers sometimes seem to interpret in their own ways.

Anyway we have had an agreement that is OK for us. We have received a permission to stay with the boat in USA for 12 months. We are allowed to move the boat within the county making it possible for us to sail to West Palm Beach which is OK for departure to the Bahamas. Before we leave the country we will have to clear out from USA and will then receive our boat papers that now are deposited at the Customs & Border Protection.

Vero Beach City Marina where we now are is a nice place to stay when sailing along the US East Coast. We have been here some times before and we meet people here that we have met before.

When you arrive at the marina they advice you a mooring ball to go to. Often you have to raft up together with another boat at the mooring ball. Nice way to get new friends! We meet with Earl and Kathy from the boat Seeker that we were rafted together with four years ago!

The boat is tied up to a mooring bouy and ashore there is a good dingy-dock. Ashore is also the marina building with showers, toilets, washing mashines, lounge with TV and WiFi, diesel dock etc. Three times a week you can be visited by the pump-out boat that takes care of your wastewater tank. Here are also free buses once an hour that takes you to an enormous shopping area. Perfect place for provisioning before sailing to the Bahamas. There is absolutely a good reason to fill your fridge and freezer as it is a lot cheaper here than in the Bahamas and also a much bigger assortment.

Every morning there is a radio network to keep contact between the cruisers and for information about the activities in the area. Usually several meetings and gatherings every week.

Many cruisers stay here for quite some time. The marina is sometimes called ”Velcro Beach Marina” as it is so easy to get stucked here.
