Key West

När Balance plöjer genom det ljusgröna vattnet vid angöringen av Key West får vi Hemingway-associationer.

Att läsa hans böcker i Key West gör att böckerna på något sätt känns tre eller fyr dimensionella. Man andas samma luft som Hemingway. Balance flyter i samma vatten som Pilar gjorde. Associationerna är många. Har provat att dricka gin & tonic som Hemingway gjorde med ett par stänk angostura i. Så kallad ”pink tonic”. Tycker dock att mitt eget sätt att blanda gin & tonic är överlägset Hemingways.

Vi har hängt på Sloppy Joes Bar. (Hemingways stamkrog) Trevligt ställe. Verkar som de har trubadur eller band som spelar alla tider på dygnet.

Vi ligger ankrade vid Fleming Key men går in till Key West Bight Marina på onsdag den 22:e där vi reserverat plats över juldagarna. Till jul får vi besök av sonen Göran med Maria och dottern Lova.

When Balance is plowing through the light green water at the arrival of Key West, we get Hemingway associations.

To read his books in Key West makes the books somehow feel three or four dimensional. You breathe the same air as Hemingway did. Balance is floating in the same water as Pilar did. The associations are many. Have tried to drink gin & tonic the way Hemingway did with a few splashes of Angostura. So called "pink tonic". I do, however, think my own way of mixing gin & tonic is superior to the way Hemingway did.

We have been to Sloppy Joe's Bar. (Hemingway's favorite pub) Nice place. Seems like they have a troubadour or band playing at all hours.

We are anchored in Fleming Key, but goes in to Key West Bight Marina on Wednesday 22nd where we have made reservation for a berth during the holidays. For Christmas we are visited by our son Göran with Maria and their daughter Lova.

Florida Keys

På vår väg söderut längs Floridas kust och Florida Keys har vi nu gjort ett stopp i Marathon. Vi är på väg till Key West där vi får besök av vår son Göran med Maria och dottern Lova som ska fira jul med oss.

När vi i maj i år befann oss på Isla Mujeres i Mexico träffade vi amerikanska paret Lynn och Russell från båten Blue Highway. Seglade sedan tillsammans över Golfströmmen till Key West och har hållit kontakt sedan dess. De har under hösten köpt ett hus i Marathon. Utanför det utomordentligt trevliga huset, byggt som en oktogon, har de en ordentlig brygga med plats för två långsidesförtöjda segelbåtar. Där ligger nu Balance förtöjd akter om Blue Highway.

Sjövägen till deras hus går via ett labyrintliknande kanalsystem genom mangroven. Russell hade rått oss att stänga av elektronisk utrustning då vi på vägen passerar fyra stora radiomaster som kan ge störningar på elektronisk utrustning. Radiomasterna har till uppgift att sända amerikansk propaganda till befolkningen på Cuba. Loggen på Blue Highway hade visat fart på 250 knop när de passerade. Vi råkade ut för att larmet för laddningen på motorn löste ut. Hoppas det var tillfälligt beroende på strålningen från radiomasterna.

Från Marathon har vi omkring 40 sjömil kvar till Key West. När man reser landvägen till Key West reser man över Seven Mile Bridge (10,93 km lång) som börjar vid Marathon. Bron har figurerat i många filmer bl.a Licence to Kill och Mission Impossible.

IN ENGLISH:

On our way south along the coast of Florida and the Florida Keys, we have now made a stop in Marathon. We are on our way to Key West where our son Göran with Maria and their daughter Lova will spend Christmas together with us.

When we were on Isla Mujeres, Mexico in May this year, we met American couple Lynn and Russell from the boat Blue Highway. Together we sailed across the Gulf Stream to Key West and have kept in touch since then. They have recently bought a house in Marathon. Outside the exceptionally nice house, built as an octagon, they have a proper dock with room for two long side moored sailboats. There is now Balance moored astern of Blue Highway.

Navigating to their house is via an exciting canal system through the mangroves. Russell had advised us to turn off electronic devices when we pass four large radio masts which can lead to disturbances in electronic equipment. The radio masts are to send American propaganda to the population in Cuba. Log on Blue Highway had shown speed of 250 knots as they passed. Our alarm for charging on the engine went on. Hope it was because of the radio masts and nothing else.

From Marathon we have about 40 nautical miles to Key West. When you go by car to Key West you cross the Seven Mile Bridge (10.93 km long) that starts at Marathon. The bridge has appeared in numerous films, among others Licence to Kill and Mission Impossible.

Ett par dagar på ICW (Intracoastal Waterways) - A couple of days at the ICW

Ligger vid en boj på norra sidan av bron vid St Augustine. Tio i nio ropar vi upp brovakten för att bekräfta att vi vill passera vid broöppningen kl nio. Målet för dagen var Halifax Marina i Daytona. En sträcka om 47 NM som tog oss åtta timmar. Under dagen hade vi ganska kraftig vind rakt emot oss om ca 20-25 knop.

Vi passerar sex fasta broar och fyra öppningsbara broar under dagen. Alla fasta broar på ICW har 65 fots fri höjd. Vår masthöjd är 61 fot så det fungerar. Vattendjupet är oftast mellan tre och sju meter. De öppningsbara broarna vi idag passerade var alla sådana som öppnar ”på begäran”.  Man anropar brovakten och han anpassar sedan öppningen så att bron står öppen i exakt det ögonblick man passerar. Man håller sin fart mot bron och litar på brovakten. Vid många andra broar har man fasta öppningstider. Antingen hel- och halv timme eller kvart i och kvart över. Ibland händer då att man får lite väntetid.

Många amerikanska båtar seglar söderut längs Floridas kust så här års och många marinor är fullbelagda. De seglar sedan till Bahamas där de är över vintern för att sedan segla norrut till Maine över sommaren. Mot hösten blir det kallt däruppe och då seglar man söderut igen.

Vi hade bokat bryggplats på Halifax Marina. Anropar marinakontoret via vhf-radion när vi är på väg in och får instruktioner för att ta oss till bryggplats G:17. När vi kommer dit står två personer där för att ta emot våra tampar och assistera vid tilläggningen. Man har räkningen klar och vi får ett välkomstpaket med all info om Daytona.

En man som har sin båt på andra sidan bryggan erbjuder sig att skjutsa oss med bil till supermarket följande dag. Han har en trawler men har tidigare haft två segelbåtar och bott ombord i båt i trettio år. Vi träffar hela tiden så vänliga och hjälpsamma människor i USA.

Nästa dag kommer Peter Grady från Marine Services of Florida för att hjälpa oss med några Raymarine-instrument som bråkat lite med oss.

På vår väg söderut längs ICW ser vi mycket skador som orkanen Matthew medförde. Jättemånga hus med sönderblåsta tak och båtar som blåst upp på land.

Det har varit lite småkallt vissa dagar på vägen söderut. Långbyxor, tröja och jacka. Och skor! Nu har det blivit varmare och den normala ”cruiser-kostymen”, shorts, kortärmad skjorta/t-shirt och sandaler är på.

Fredag kväll anlöper vi Vero Beach Municipal Marina. Angör deras bränslebrygga där vi fyller 90 gallon diesel till en kostnad av 214 USD. Senast vi bunkrade diesel var på denna plats i juni när vi var på väg norrut.

Vero Beach är ett mycket populärt ställe och många tillbringar hela vintern här. Det sägs att det är lätt att ”fastna” här. Därför kallas platsen skämtsamt för ”Velcro Beach” (Velcro=kardborreband). Marinan har förtöjningsplatser vid bojar i viken som kostar 16 USD/natt. Man kan också ligga vid brygga men det kostar lite mer. Emellertid är alla bojar upptagna när vi kommer men vi blir anvisade plats bredvid amerikanska båten Seeker med Kathy och Earl ombord. Man ligger ibland upp till tre båtar per boj. Seeker är här för femte året i rad. De är på väg till Bahamas men stannar här över jul och nyår. Mycket trevliga människor och inga som helst problem med att vi förtöjer utanpå dem vid bojen. Får massa tips av dem om hur man tar sig till Farmers Market, stranden och supermarketen.

När vi kom hit betalade vi för två nätter men bestämmer oss att stanna två nätter ytterligare. Det är trevligt att vara här och vi hoppas att vi hinner träffa våra danska vänner Dorte och René som är på väg hit. De lämnar sin båt här när de åker till Danmark för att fira jul.

På söndagkvällen blir vi inbjudna till Kathy och Earl på Seeker för sundowner tillsammans med besättningarna från tre andra båtar. På måndag kväll är det ”burger special” på en restaurang i närheten dit vi tar oss med dingarna och blir ett sällskap om ca tjugo personer. Nu har Dorte och René också kommit hit och vi delar dinge med dem.

Located at a buoy on the north side of the bridge at St. Augustine. Ten to nine we call the bridge master to confirm that we want to cross the bridge opening at nine. The goal for the day was Halifax Marina in Daytona. A distance of about 47 nm which took us eight hours. During the day, we had quite a strong wind straight at us about 20-25 knots.

We pass six fixed bridges and four opening bridges during the day. All fixed bridges on the ICW have 65 foot clear height. Our mast height is 61 feet so it works. The water depth is usually between three and seven meters. The opening bridges today we passed were all those opening "on demand". You call the bridge master and he then adjusts the opening so that the bridge is open at exactly the moment you pass. You keep your speed towards the bridge and trust in the bridgemaster. In many other bridges they have fixed opening hours. Either full and half hour or quarter in and quarter past. Sometimes it happens that you get a little waiting time.

Many American boats sail south along the Florida coast this time of year and many marinas are full. They then sail to the Bahamas where they are over the winter and then sail north to Maine for the summer. In the autumn it will be cold up there, and then they sail south again.

We had booked berth in Halifax Marina. Calls the marina office on VHF radio when we are on the way in and receive instructions to take us to the pontoon location G:17.  When we get there are two people there to receive our lines and assist in mooring. They have the bill ready and we get a welcome pack with all details of Daytona.

A man who has his boat on the other side of the pontoon offers to take us by car to the supermarket the following day. He has a trawler but previously had two sailboats and lived aboard the boat for thirty years. All the time we meet so friendly and helpful people in the United States.

The next day, Peter Grady from Marine Services of Florida came to help us with our Raymarine equipment which we have had some trouble with.

On our way south along the ICW we see much damage caused by Hurricane Matthew. Lots of houses with damaged roofs and boats blown up on land.

It has been a bit chilly some days on our way south. Pants, sweater and jacket. And the shoes! Now it has become warmer, and the normal "cruiser-suit", shorts, short-sleeved shirt / t-shirt and sandals on.

Friday evening we call at Vero Beach Municipal Marina. Calling at their fuel dock where we fill 90 gallons of diesel at a cost of 214 USD. Last we bunkered diesel was at this place in June when we were heading north.

Vero Beach is a very popular place and many spend the winter here. It is said that it is easy to get "stuck" here. Therefore the place is called jokingly "Velcro Beach".  The marina has moorings at buoys in the bay which costs 16 US / night. You can also lie at the pier but it costs a little more. However, all buoys busy when we come but we will be alloted place next American boat Seeker with Kathy and Earl aboard. It is sometimes up to three boats per buoy. Seeker is here for the fifth year in a row. They are heading to the Bahamas but stay here over Christmas and the New Year. Very nice people and no problem with that, we moor outside of them at the buoy. Receive a lot of tips from them about how to get to the Farmers Market, the beach and the supermarket.

When we came here, we paid for two nights but decide to stay two nights more. It's nice to be here and we hope we have time to meet with our Danish friends Dorte and René who are on their way here. They will leave their boat here when they go to Denmark to celebrate Christmas.

On Sunday evening, we were invited to Kathy and Earl of Seeker for sundowner along with crews from three other boats. On Monday evening, there is "burger special" at a restaurant nearby to where we take the dinghy. We were about twenty people together. Now Dorte and René are also here and we share dinghy with them.
