From Florida to Georgia

Ser på väderprognoserna att vi får dåligt väder några dagar framöver. Bokar därför in oss på en boj vid St Augustine Municipal Marina för att låta ovädret passera när vi ligger där.

St Augustine räknas som USA:s äldsta stad med anor från 1500-talet. Trivsam stad med mysiga gator, mängder med butiker, gallerier, restauranger. Kanske lite turistiskt men det får man ta.

En dag åt vi lunch med vår vän Pam. Pam var tidigare Port Officer för Ocean Cruising Club i Green Cove Springs där vi landförvarat Balance flera år. Det är så vi träffat och lärt känna Pam. Hon är nu inte längre Port Officer men numera en mycket god vän till oss. Green Cove Springs ligger inte så långt från St Augustine. Det tar knappt en timme med bil. Med båt tar det dock ca två dagar eftersom man måste följa St Johns River via Jacksonville. Båtvägen är alltså betydligt längre.

På lördagar är det Farmers Market. Vi går dit och tittar. Där finns grönsaker, ägg, hemgjorda marmelader, såser och andra godsaker samt en hel del konsthantverk. På området finns en scen där alla som vill spela ett instrument får vara med. Åtskilliga gitarrer, ståbas, tre banjos, tre fioler, mandolin, trummor. Också flera sångförmågor. Spelglädje!

På vägen tillbaka till båten passerar vi fyren i St Augustine. När jag fotograferar Kicki framför fyren är det en dam som erbjuder sig att ta en bild på oss båda. Det är ganska vanligt att man erbjuder sig att ta bilder på detta sätt. Utan att reflektera lämnar jag över mobiltelefonen till den trevliga damen. I fodralet till mobiltelefonen har jag tre kreditkort, körkort och en del kontanter. De som erbjuder sig att hjälpa till med fotografering är oftast damer, något äldre, dvs i vår egen ålder.

En dag tog vi oss till en outlet för att köpa skor och Levis-jeans. Träffade en väldigt trevlig expedit i skoaffären. När vi skulle betala frågade hon om jag varit militär. Militärer och veteraner behandlas ofta väl i USA och får rabatter på olika ställen. Jag svarar att jag inte arbetat som militär men att jag gjort militärtjänstgöring. Då tyckte hon jag var värd militärrabatten om 15% vilket jag tackade för.

När vi efter flera dagar på bojen i St Augustine lämnar för vidare färd norrut är det fortfarande ganska dåligt väder. Nordliga friska vindar. Nordliga vindar är alltid kalla! Vi hade tänkt gå längre men när vi kommer till Pine Island, bestämmer vi oss för att stanna där. Blåsigt, kallt och eländigt!

När vi vaknar nästa morgon är det totalt vindstilla och så vackert! Dessutom har det blivit varmare!

Någon timme innan vi kommer till San Pablo Atlantic Boulevard Bridge upptäcker amiralen att vi kommer att få motström på 4,5 knop vid passerandet av bron. Vi har passerat denna bro flera gånger tidigare och vet att passagen är smal. Vi väljer att kraftigt dra ner på farten för att komma fram till bron när värsta strömmen passerat. Vi fick ca 2 knop motström när vi gick genom men det var inget problem.

Från Jacksonville kan man välja att fortsätta på ICW, Intracoastal Waterway eller så går man ut i havet. Vi valde att gå på utsidan och då också få tillfälle att lufta våra segel. Gick sedan in och ankrade vid Cumberland Island. Ön är bl.a känd för att där finns vilda hästar.

Det är högst ovanligt att man träffar på andra svenska båtar. Det är också relativt ovanligt att träffa på andra europeiska båtar. Vid ankringen träffar vi ett holländskt par på båten Morgane of Sark. Båten är en Hallberg-Rassy 46. De har liksom vi köpt sin båt i Bruinisse i Holland. 46:an är ju lite större än vår 39:a. Det innebär att de inte kan gå på ICW eftersom masten inte går under broarna.

Nu har vi tagit oss genom hela Florida och är nu i staten Georgia. Färden fortsätter sedan genom South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia med slutmål i Annapolis i Maryland.

Vår tanke är att lämna Balance till försäljning hos Freestate Yachts i Annapolis. Freestate Yachts är återförsäljare för Hallberg Rassy och säljer både nya och begagnade Hallberg-Rassy båtar.

Vi seglade Balance från Sverige 2012 och tycker nu att det börjar bli dags att ”swallow our anchor”.

Looking at the weather forecasts, we will have bad weather for the next few days. So we made reservation for a buoy at the St Augustine Municipal Marina to let the storm pass while we're there.

St. Augustine is considered America's oldest city, dating back to the 16th century. Nice city with cozy streets, lots of shops, galleries, restaurants. Maybe a little touristy, but you have to accept that.

One day we had lunch with our friend Pam. Pam was formerly Port Officer for the Ocean Cruising Club in Green Cove Springs where we used to store Balance for several years. That's how we met and got to know Pam. She is now no longer  Port Officer but nowadays a very good friend of ours. Green Cove Springs is not very far from St Augustine. It takes barely an hour by car. By boat, however, it takes about two days because you have to follow the St. Johns River via Jacksonville. The boat route is therefore significantly longer.

On Saturdays it is the Farmers Market. We go there and look. There are vegetables, eggs, home-made marmalades, sauces and other goodies as well as a lot of arts and crafts. In the area there is a stage where anyone who wants to play an instrument can join. Several guitars, bass, three banjos, three fiddles, mandolin, drums. Also several singing abilities. Joy of playing!

On the way back to the boat we pass the St Augustine lighthouse. When I photograph Kicki in front of the lighthouse, a lady offers to take a picture of both of us. It is quite common to offer to take pictures in this way. Without thinking, I hand over the mobile phone to the nice lady. In the case for the mobile phone I have three credit cards, my driver's license and some cash. Those who offer to help with photography are usually ladies, slightly older, i.e. our own age.

One day we went to an outlet to buy shoes and Levis jeans. Met a very nice clerk in the shoe store. When we were about to pay, she asked if I had been in the military. Military and veterans are often treated well in the US and get discounts at various places. I answer that I did not work as a soldier but that I did military service. Then she thought I was worth the military discount of 15%, which I thanked for.

When, after several days at the buoy in St. Augustine, we leave for further travel north, the weather is still quite bad. Northerly rather hard winds. Northerly winds are always cold!

We had intended to go further but when we get to Pine Island, we decide to stop there. Windy, cold and miserable!

When we wake up the next morning it is completely windless and so beautiful! Also, it has gotten warmer!

About an hour before we reach the San Pablo Atlantic Boulevard Bridge, the admiral discovers that we will have a counter current of 4.5 knots when crossing the bridge. We have passed this bridge several times before and know that the passage is narrow. We choose to slow down sharply to reach the bridge when the worst of the current has passed. We had about 2 knots of current when we went through but it wasn't a problem.

From Jacksonville you can choose to continue on the ICW, the Intracoastal Waterway or you go out to sea. We chose to go on the outside and then also have the opportunity to use our sails. Then entered and anchored at Cumberland Island. The island is known, among other things, for the presence of wild horses.

It is highly unusual to meet other Swedish boats. It is also relatively rare to meet other European boats. At the anchorage we meet a Dutch couple on the boat Morgane of Sark. The boat is a Hallberg-Rassy 46. Like us, they bought their boat in Bruinisse in Holland. The 46 is a bit bigger than our 39. That means they can't go on the ICW because the mast doesn't go under the bridges.

Now we have made it through all of Florida and are now in the state of Georgia. The journey then continues through South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia with the final destination in Annapolis in Maryland.

Our idea is to leave Balance for sale at Freestate Yachts in Annapolis. Freestate Yachts is a dealer for Hallberg Rassy and sells both new and used Hallberg-Rassy boats.

We sailed Balance from Sweden in 2012 and now think it is time to "swallow our anchor".
