Lova i Cocoa Beach

Några dagar före jul lämnade vi Marathon och seglade ner till Key West och ankrade innanför Fleming Keys. Till jul gick vi sedan in till Key West Bight Marina där vi bokat plats för juldagarna. Hämtade ut en hyrbil och körde upp till Miami och mötte vår son Göran och Maria med dottern Lova. Vi firade jul tillsammans i Key West. Under mellandagarna seglade Göran, Lova och jag Balance upp till Marathon igen. Kerstin och Maria tog hyrbilen dit.

Vid USA:s sydligaste punkt

Under färden från Key West till Marathon (ca 43 sjömil) hade vi ett märkligt möte på havet. Norrifrån kommer engelska båten Suzie Too med Suzanne och David samt den amerikanska båten Ecco med Mary och Jeff. Vi seglade tillsammans med båda dessa båtar i OCC-rallyt under januari till maj 2016. Vädret var lugnt och vi kunde stanna till och prata med varandra en stund. De var båda på väg till Key West för att fira nyår.

Vi lämnade sedan Balance hemma hos våra vänner Lynn och Russell i Marathon för att tillsammans med Göran, Maria och Lova göra bilresa i Florida.

Började med ett besök i Everglades. Everglades är ett träskområde i södra Florida som är nationalpark och ingår i Unescos naturvärldsarv. Området är känt för rikt fågelliv, sköldpaddor, ormar och alligatorer. Man kan göra rundtur med s.k. airboat. Airboaten har en flygplansliknande propeller i aktern vilket gör att den tar sig fram över träskområdena. Efter rundturen följer en s.k. ”Alligator show”. Vi fick då bland annat lära oss att människan inte är bra föda för alligatorer. Detta är ett matsmältningsproblem. Salthalten i människokroppen stämmer inte för alligatorns matsmältning. Man kan dock inte vara säker på att alla alligatorer känner till detta. Däremot är det annorlunda med krokodilen som lever i saltvatten och har människan som ett alternativ på menyn. Det finns en miljon alligatorer i Florida.

Tog oss sedan upp till Cocoa Beach som vi valt som bas för våra utflykter i Florida. I Cocoa Beach finns en fantastisk strand som också är mycket uppskattad bland surfare. Ron Jons surfbutik i Cocoa Beach har öppet 24 timmar per dygn. Om man har svårt att sova kan man alltså gå till butiken och köpa en ny surfbräda eller varför inte ett par nya badbyxor mitt i natten.

Cocoa Beach ligger strax söder om Cape Kennedy Space Center. Besökte Cape Kennedy och fick en intressant visning och rundtur på anläggningen där man byggt och skjutit upp mängder med rymdfarkoster under åren. I Cape Kennedy-området lever ca 5000  alligatorer och vi såg flera av dem.

Man berättade att man tidigare haft dörrar vid anläggningen som öppnades automatiskt via fotocell men att man måste ta bort detta då man fick in alligatorer.

Från Cocoa är det ca en timmes körning till Orlando. I Orlando besökte vi Universal Studios. När man betalar inträdet tror man att de tar betalt för årskort. För två år!

Lova hade sett fram mot att få besöka deras Harry Potter-land. Hon blev inte besviken!

Parken erbjuder massor med spännande upplevelser. I Simpson-området kan man dricka en Duff. Man kan se 4-dimensionell film och allt möjligt annat viktigt och nyttigt och spännande och roligt.

A few days before Christmas, we left Marathon and sailed down to Key West and anchored inside Fleming Key. For Christmas, we went in to the Key West Bight Marina where we had made a reservation for the Christmas days. Picked up a rental car and drove up to Miami and met our son Göran and Maria with their daughter Lova. We celebrated Christmas together in Key West. One of the days after Christmas Göran, Lova and I sailed Balance up to Marathon again. Kerstin and Maria took the rental car there.

During the trip from Key West to Marathon (about 43 miles), we had a wonderful meeting at sea. From the north came the English boat Suzie Too with Suzanne and David, as well as the American boat Ecco with Mary and Jeff. We sailed with both of these boats in the OCC rally during January-May 2016. The weather was calm and we could stop and have a short chat. They were both on their way to Key West to celebrate New Year.

We then left Balance at the home of our friends Lynn and Russell in Marathon and together with Göran, Maria, and Lova to do a tour by car in Florida.

Began with a visit to the Everglades. The Everglades is a swamp area in South Florida which is a national park and is included in the UNESCO natural world heritage. The area is known for the rich birdlife, turtles, snakes and alligators. You can do a tour with an airboat. The airboat has an aircraft-like propeller at the stern which allows it to take forward over the swamp areas. After the tour follows a so-called "Alligator Show". They told us that man is no good food for alligators. This is a digestive problem. The salinity of the human body does not match the alligator digestion. One can not be sure that all the alligators know this. However, it is different with the crocodile that lives in salt water and the human being is an option on their menu. There are a million alligators in Florida.

We then went to Cocoa Beach that we have chosen as a base for our excursions in Florida. In Cocoa Beach is a wonderful beach which is also very popular with surfers. Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach is open 24 hours a day. If you have trouble sleeping, you can go to the store and buy a new surfboard or even a new pair of swim trunks in the middle of the night.

Cocoa Beach is just south of Cape Kennedy Space Center. Visited Cape Kennedy and got an interesting viewing and tour of the facility where they built and launched numerous spacecraft over the years. In Cape Kennedy area live about 5,000 alligators and we saw several of them.

They told us that they previously had doors at the plant that opened automatically, but that they had to remove them when the alligators came in.

Cocoa is about an hour drive to Orlando. In Orlando, we visited Universal Studios. When you pay the entrance you beleive that they charge for season tickets. Two seasons!

Lova had been looking forward to visiting their Harry Potter land. She was not disappointed!

The park offers lots of exciting experiences. In the Simpson area you can drink a Duff. One can see the four-dimensional film and everything else important and useful, exciting and fun.
